The progression from stone tools to forged steel
Crafting in 7DTD moves through a fairly linear material progression. You don't need to rush every tier — but knowing what unlocks what helps you plan.
Skill magazines and perk books found while looting unlock recipes and give passive bonuses, separate from your perk points. Vehicle Adventures magazines, for example, are the main way to unlock higher-tier vehicles (see Vehicles) — reading them stacks toward unlocks even without spending skill points on the related attribute.
| Station | Unlocks | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Campfire | Basic cooking, boiling water | Day 1 |
| Forge | Iron tools/weapons, smelting | First few days |
| Workbench | Vehicle parts, storage containers, mods | Early-mid game |
| Chemistry Station | Gas, medical items, chemicals | Mid game |
| Cement Mixer | Concrete for permanent base upgrades | Mid-late game |
Tools and weapons degrade with use. Keep repair kits or raw materials on hand for whatever you're actively using — running a tool to zero durability mid-fight is a common and avoidable death. Higher-tier repair items (steel/tool-specific kits) become available as you progress.
